EVs Are Creating New Jobs -But Only for People Who Learn the Skills Early

Mechanics days are numbered?

For decades, mechanics have built their careers around engines, oil, gearboxes, exhausts and fuel systems.

But the vehicle is changing.

Electric vehicles bring a different language into the workshop: batteries, inverters, electric motors, high-voltage systems, regenerative braking, charging and software diagnostics.

So, are EVs replacing mechanics?

Not exactly.

EVs are replacing the old idea of a mechanic. They are creating demand for a new kind of technician — one who understands both mechanical systems and electric mobility.

The Work Is Changing

EVs have fewer moving parts than petrol and diesel vehicles. That means some traditional service work will reduce over time.

But new work is emerging.

Technicians will need to understand:

  • High-voltage safety
  • Battery systems
  • Charging systems
  • Electric motors
  • Diagnostics
  • Safe workshop procedures

The risk is not that mechanics will have nothing to do.

The real risk is that mechanics who do not retrain may no longer be allowed to do the work.

Mechanics Must Not Be Left Behind

South Africa has thousands of informal mechanics, small workshops, TVET learners and young people trying to enter the automotive industry.

The EV transition must include them.

Green mobility can create new opportunities in electric two- and three-wheeler servicing, delivery fleets, mobile retail businesses, charging support and township-based technical services.

This is not only about jobs.
It is also about entrepreneurship.

What Should Mechanics Do Now?

Mechanics, apprentices and workshop owners should start preparing now.

Learn the basics of EV and hybrid technology. Understand high-voltage safety. Build confidence with diagnostics. Learn how charging works. Most importantly, start thinking beyond traditional repairs.

The future mechanic will not only fix vehicles.
The future mechanic will support mobility, energy and technology.

EVrgreenskills Can Help

EVrgreenskills is helping South Africa prepare for the electric vehicle transition through practical electric and hybrid vehicle training.

Our programmes are designed for technicians, students, trainers, workshops, TVET learners and service providers who want to stay relevant in a changing industry.

EVs are not the end of mechanics.

They are the beginning of the green mobility technician.
